VAT on Medical Aesthetics Treatments

Cosmetic Treatments and VAT

The VAT on medical aesthetics treatments are again being discussed, will HMRC deem that treatments such as botox, dermal fillers and skin peels as cosmetic treatments not medical.

How would VAT effect the medical aesthetics clinics and the treatments provided?

Answer: Competively with prices or reduce profitability either can seriously hinder any start up clinic which requires financial investment to develop.

What options do medical aesthetics clinics have if VAT registered ?

VAT is currently 20% a cosmetic clinic or medical aesthetics practice would have to pay the HMRC 20% of all sales.

The clinic will need to either increase the cosmetic treatment prices which can be a competitive disadvantage or to incurr the VAT and lose 20% off your gross margins.

You will also be required to submit a VAT return and pay the HMRC every quarter, extra accounting fees may also be required.

Not all bad news.

You can claim back 20% on any VAT you pay on services or products for your clinics. This will reduce the amount paid to HMRC and dependant on how many VAT registered suppliers and services your clinic uses.

You will need a VAT receipt to claim any VAT back from HMRC.

Gerry and the GPs NHS Reforms

NHS reforms will include General Practitioners having to manage their own NHS practices.

Many NHS doctors surgeries will have to understand some of the fundamentals of running a business, budgeting, forecasting, procurement, leadership and providing cost effective services.

What many have not yet considered is the feasibility of introducing supplementary business units that can generate extra revenue to support their current NHS medical services.

Since earlier reforms in the dental area, NHS and private Dentists have already started to add additional services such as medical aesthetic procedures (botox. Dermal fillers, skin peels), holistic treatments, beauty, diet and nutrition some have even introduced private medical services including dermatology consultations and in some cases cosmetic surgery.

Will the local general practice change in the same way as dental practices once the reforms have been implemented and how will GPs manage their practice?

How will the government’s health reforms affect GPs and patient care?

PCTs currently pay hospitals for services to their patients, when doctors have control of their PCT budgets and have to make decisions based on not only patient care but also if the practice can afford the service or medicine.

Doctors Training

KT Training introduced business training as part of cosmetic courses.

In our 6 years of training medical professionals we realised that doctors have limited knowledge of the fundamentals of running a private business due to the nature of their specialty and the structure of the NHS.

We have also found that doctors have the intelligence to understand the fundamentals if they are provided
with the correct training.

How do KT Training assist GPs in developing private cosmetic practices?

The complimentary business lecture which has been called the condensed 2 hour MBA in the medical aesthetics business is part of the introduction to botox training course.

We provide a structured presentation to educate doctors on the fundamentals required to start and developing a successful cosmetic practice.

Medical Aesthetics VAT on Cosmetic Treatments

Should medical aesthetics clinics be VAT registered?
There has been a lot of concern from medical professionals who run a private practice on the issue of charging VAT on the treatments provided.

Medical aesthetics clinics which have a turn over of £67,000 (the VAT registration threshold) are in a dilemma.

Do you become a VAT registered company?

In most business's this would be the case and they would be required to registered and pay VAT (20% from 4th jan 2010) on their turn over quarterly.

Medical practices, treatments and prescriptions for medicines do not require VAT registration as these services and products are VAT exempt. This place medical aesthetics clinics in a very grey area, are they medical which is VAT exempt or are they aesthetic, cosmetic which would require VAT registration and the clinic would have to absorb the VAT or charge this additional to the patients.

Some clinics identify if the patient requires the treatment for medical or cosmetic reasons to reduce the VAT this may or may not be a solution. Until the HMRC have a clear classification for medical aesthetics practices this will always be a difficult one to answer.

You always discuss your VAT or tax questions with a qualified accountant.

Let me know your thoughts and experiences with this.
